The History - The Bull is located on the A515 between Buxton and Ashbourne. The history of the bull can be traced back over 700 years. It started life as a farmhouse located on the Roman Road between Little Chester and Buxton, the road at this time was called “The Street”. In 1472 the farmhouse became a Hostelry and was called “The Bull”. In 1654 the Bull changed name to become “Hurdlow House and can also be found in many old document being called “Hurdlow Thorn”. This where its name today comes from “The Bull I th Thorn”. In the 18th and 19th Centuries the Bull was a permanent coaching inn on the Derby to Manchester router and served coaches and houses with a resting place and safe haven. Today ii serve good home food and has a welcoming smile at the old bar.

Inside the Bull it like taking a turn back in time. Old coat of arms and bit of Armour can be found in just about every room. The Main Bar is part of the old building and with uneven floors and low beams you really do feel like you have stepped back in time. The Inn has many rooms from the pool room to the medieval room all hidden away and just as warming. On the other side of the building you have a large events room and next to this a smaller bar area which only seem to be for special functions while we could not find the date this part was build it most defiantly is not as old as the rest of the Inn.

The “Bull” has many stories of the paranormal and a range of spirits that reside here. Out side next to the road you will find “The Hanging Tree”. Said to be used to hang witches and those accused of witch craft, with the long history of the Bull this may or may not be true.

As times change so is the Bull with plans to shut this medieval coaching house planned for later this year and for it to return to it original dwellings as a farm house. It is short to be able to visit a great peace of British history.

As we drove up to the Bull it was very clear that we were in the middle of now where. We the nearest lights looking to be miles away. The “Bull” did not jump out at us we very nearly drove straight past. The Inn is set back from the road with large trees surrounding the view from the road.

As it is a working coaching house at the moment there were still many people in the bar as we arrived. It seemed to be a warm and welcoming place. After a quick coke at the bar we moved to the event room on the other side which was to be the base room for the night. This investigation was with Spooky Nights and we had Three members of the Spooky Nights team and about 25 of us as guests.

The rooms that we had available for the investigation where as follows:

• Main Bar (available after 11:30hrs)
• Pool Room
• Dinning Room
• Medieval Room
• Function Room
• Function Room Side Bar
• The outside Areas

The site layout below gives you an idea of the layout and the location of the rooms. This plan is not to scale but we have marked the location of the CCTV cameras that we used for the nights investigation.

Our investigation started in the Function room bar with 12 of us conducting a watch and wait. For  this we called out to the spirits and asked them to make themselves known to us. On this vigil we had a few knocks but we debunked these as coming from the other group who where in the Function room next door or from people using the toilet that was located just outside the function room. We did have three taps that came from within the room for which we could not locate a source. However if these were paranormal we could not get them to replicate the taps. We had no activity on the K2’s or from any other piece of equipment that we had with us. After 20 minutes in this room we decided to move outside to the hanging tree.

The hanging tree is said to be where they would hang witches, it has in the past said to be very active around the tree. Looking at the tree size and the branches I am not sure if this would have been of a size or strength to be able to hang any one from. We formed a circle around the tree and placed K2’s and Mel meters at the base of the tree. We had no activity on either the K2’s or the MEL meters. We called out to the spirits and asked them to come forward and join us. While on this vigil we twice heard voices that sounded like they were growling at us but in a human voice not that of an animal. Both these noises while quite did not seem to be coming from on the wind but felt very close to some of the members of the group. I also heard what sounded like a child creaming in pain but I seemed to be the only one that heard it. This sounded like it was further away and not with us at the tree but I feel it was closer than the nearest dwellings that would have been about a mile away as the crow flies.

Next we spit into slightly smaller groups of about 8 and we started in the pool room. For this we set up some trigger object on the pool table including a teddy, cat balls and REM pod. There was also K2 spread around the room. We conducted a watch and wait and asked the spirits to move the objects on the table or to make themselves know to us in any way they wished. One of the other guests felt the presents of a little girl, as she was saying this I was also feeling that there was a little girl in the room who had drowned or was just soaked in water. Unfortunately she did not want to make herself known to the rest of the group as we had no activity  on any of the devices.

The Video to the left shows a light anomaly that was captured by our IR camera in this vigil. We are not saying this is a spirit or paranormal but we did not capture any bugs of dust in the pool room and that is what makes this unusual.

We will let you decide if you think this is paranormal or not but is strange that this happens only when she is talking.

Our next vigil was in the Medieval Room. This room was full of large tables with chairs and in the far corner sits a large throne style chair which is said to be haunted. As we walked in to the room and for the first and only time in the room we had all Three of the K2’s that were sat on the tables go off at the same time. The activity seemed to last for only a few seconds and we were not able to get it to happen again. This could have been paranormal or the more likely reason is the electro radiation created as we all walked in was picked up by the devices and when we settled the ration did too. Our next vigil was in the Medieval Room. This room was full of large tables with chairs and in the far corner sits a large throne style chair which is said to be haunted. As we walked in to the room and for the first and only time in the room we had all Three of the K2’s that were sat on the tables go off at the same time. The activity seemed to last for only a few seconds and we were not able to get it to happen again. I did have the feeling of being stabbed in the right arm and it felt like the right side of my face had been injured in some way. Other people that sat in the chair also felt grand and like the lord of the manor.

The glass work proved again to be quite with nothing happening, we had no knocks or taps and the room gave us no other activity apart from the K2 at the start.On this vigil we spit into two smaller groups and used glasses on the tables to try and communicate with the spirits. Our next Vigil was in the main bar area. For this vigil we started with a Oujia board. This was conducted on one of the tables next to the fire place. We called out and although one of the other groups had reported that the glass had moved for them we had nothing. We then moved onto table tipping. This again proved to be nothing happening so we tried a watch and wait calling out and asking for the spirits to make a noise or to do something to let us know that they were there. We had no responses and no activity on any of our devices. The video taken shows no activity, not even a bit of bust.

The clip on the left is in the main Bar, here we conducted a Oujia board and table tipping. We had NO movement on the glass or the table.

This is the first investigation where we can say that we had NO paranormal activity on the night that we were there. On the evidence that we have we would say that the “The Bull in Thorn” coach house is not haunted. This is only on the evidence that we have. Other groups may have found evidence but on our investigation we could find nothing to say that it is. For this reason we would have to say that the Bull while a lovely establishment is not Haunted. This could be that the spirits did not want to come forward but with out some evidence we are not able to say that it is haunted.  

While we had not activity from the spirit world we did our investigation with a great team of people and we hope that we will do further investigations with some of them again soon.
